A 10 ft × 10 ft slab at 4 in needs 1.23 cubic yards, or about 62 80-lb bags with 10% extra. Order 1.5 cubic yards.

Two weights you might need

The weight of the bags is what you carry home: the number of bags times the bag weight. It's under "Bag weight and trips" in the result. Enter your vehicle's payload (on the sticker inside the driver's door, or in the manual) to see how many trips that is.

The weight of the poured concrete matters for forms, bracing and anything the slab sits on. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association puts normal-weight concrete at 140 to 150 lb/ft³ (2,240 to 2,400 kg/m³). The calculator uses the upper end, 150 lb/ft³, so the figure errs on the heavy side. QUIKRETE lists about 140 lb/ft³ for its bagged mix.

How weight is calculated

Poured weight is volume × density. One cubic yard is 0.7646 m³, so at 2,400 kg/m³ it weighs 1,835 kg, or 4,045 lb.

Trips are the total bag weight divided by your payload, rounded up. With a 1,000 lb payload, 45 80-lb bags (3,600 lb) take 4 trips.

Hauling tips

  • Never exceed your payload. Split the load into trips instead.
  • Smaller bags, same weight. Sixty-pound bags are easier to lift, but a cubic yard of them still weighs 3,600 lb.
  • Ask about delivery. Ask whether your store delivers pallets of bags, and compare the fee with the trips it saves.
  • Plan for wet weight. Forms hold wet concrete, which is heavier than the dry bags once water is added. Use the poured weight when bracing.

Questions people ask

How much does a cubic yard of concrete weigh?

About 4,045 lb, or 2.02 tons, at 2,400 kg/m³ (about 150 lb/ft³). Bagged mix is a little lighter: QUIKRETE lists about 140 lb/ft³, or 3,780 lb per cubic yard.

How much concrete does an 80-lb bag make?

0.60 cubic feet, according to the QUIKRETE and SAKRETE data sheets. A 60-lb bag makes 0.45 ft³ and a 40-lb bag 0.30 ft³.

How many bags can I carry in one trip?

Divide your vehicle's payload by the bag weight. For example, with a 1,000 lb payload you can carry 12 80-lb bags per trip. Find the payload on the sticker inside the driver's door or in the manual.

How much do the bags for one cubic yard weigh?

45 80-lb bags weigh 3,600 lb, and 60 60-lb bags weigh 3,600 lb. That's dry weight, before you add water.
