Bags per cubic yard (US bags)
One cubic yard is 27 ft³. Divide 27 by the bag's yield, then round up: you can't buy part of a bag. These counts have no allowance for waste.

Bags per cubic meter (metric bags)
Yields for metric bags vary by product, so check the bag you're buying. The calculator uses the 9 L figure for 20 kg bags by default, which gives the higher count.
| Bag | Product | Yield per bag | Bags per m³ (exact) | Bags to buy per m³ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 kg | Australian Builders High Strength Concrete Mix | 10 L | 100 | 100 |
| 20 kg | Easy Mix Super Strength Concrete | 9 L | 111.1 | 112 |
| 25 kg | SAKRETE High-Strength Concrete Mix | 0.41 ft³ | 86.1 | 87 |
| 30 kg | QUIKRETE 5000 High Early Strength Concrete Mix (No. 1007) | 0.5 ft³ | 70.6 | 71 |
| 30 kg | SAKRETE High-Strength Concrete Mix | 0.5 ft³ | 70.6 | 71 |

Don't forget the extra
These counts are for exactly one cubic yard. Real pours lose concrete to uneven ground, form bulges and spills, so buy more. NRMCA suggests ordering 4% to 10% over the measured volume for ready-mix, and the same logic applies to bags. The calculator adds 10% for slabs by default.
Yields assume you add the amount of water on the bag. NRMCA notes that adding too much water can reduce strength and increase cracking, so don't add water to stretch a batch.
Questions people ask
How many 80-lb bags of concrete are in a yard?
45. Each 80-lb bag makes 0.60 ft³ and a cubic yard is 27 ft³, so 27 ÷ 0.60 = 45.
How many 60-lb bags make a yard?
60. A 60-lb bag makes 0.45 ft³, and 27 ÷ 0.45 = 60.
How many 40-lb and 50-lb bags make a yard?
90 40-lb bags (0.30 ft³ each) or 72 50-lb bags (0.375 ft³ each).
How many 20 kg bags make a cubic meter?
It depends on the product. At the 9 L per bag that Easy Mix lists, you need 112. Australian Builders states about 100 bags per cubic meter (10 L per bag): 100. A 30 kg bag that makes 0.50 ft³ (14.2 L) needs 71.
Should I buy exactly that many bags?
No. Add 4% to 10% for waste and uneven ground, as the NRMCA suggests for ready-mix, and round up to a whole bag.
